Application for learners driving licence

Dear sir/madam,

Last year I applied for a provisional licence and my money was sent back to me saying that I already had one. I did have a provisional licence when I was 16 or 17. I am 47 now and I thought the old paper ones only lasted 2 years. I would like to take my bike test but cannot as I don't have a provisional licence as I've said I did have but many years ago, in fact nearly 30 years ago. I have tried and tried to explain my situation but to no avail please could you advise me on how I go about getting my provisional licence. Yours sincerely F.S.Gilchrist

Your provisional driving licence lasts till your 70th birthday. So if you have applied for one when you were 16, then it means you still hold a provisional licence. Therefore you cannot apply for a new one because you already have one. What you can do is request for a replacement one from DVLA. All you need to do if fill out a D1 form (application for a new driver's licence) and send it to the DVLA with the correct fee (£20 at the time of writing).

When you get your replacement provisional driving licence, you can then go ahead with your bike test.
