Concerned about putting too much oil in the car

I put engine oil more than 1 cm from full level. What should I do?

Victoria,

Did you check the oil level in your car when the engine was cold and the car on level ground? If not, then readings may be inaccurate. A little excess oil in the engine will not cause any problems but if it's a lot, then you may need to remove the excess from the reservoir. There's a special syringe which is similar to the oil dipstick which you can purchase that will make it easy to remove oil from the engine.

Overfilling with engine oil on older cars can cause a lot of smoke in the exhaust but for newer cars, the excess oil can work its way through the breather system and burn off.
