Drink Impaired Drivers Course

I was given a 25 month driving ban and have almost completed a drink impaired drivers course (DIDs) which was a 15 week course imposed by the court but will not get any time taken off my ban. Is there another course I can take to reduce this ban?

Michael,

The purpose of the Drink Impaired Drivers (DIDs) programme is to educate people who have been convicted of drink driving offences on the reasons that lead to drink-driving. People enrolled on the course will have their awareness raised on the dangers of drink driving through case studies, workshops and discussions. This course is different to the Drink Driving Rehabilitation Course in the following ways:

  • The rehab course is optional (you can choose to do it or not)
  • You can get upto a quarter of your ban lifted with the drink rehab programme
  • There's a fee to be paid to get enrolled on the rehabilitation course

Unfortunately, the drink driving rehab course can only be attended if the court which sentenced you recommended the programme, otherwise you can't do it. Since your driving disqualification was for 25 months (2 years and 1 month), you can request your licence after 2 years have elapsed but it might be more appropriate to wait another month for the ban to be lifted automatically than requesting the licence a month ealier.
