Driving car you do not own

Is it illegal to drive a car that isn't owned by you but you are insured on as the main driver?

Also is it possible to find out who the owner of the vehicle is?

Andy,

You can drive any car that you like as long as you have permission from the owner of the car and have got proper insurance cover in place (and have a valid driving licence of course). Many parents buy cars for their children and put them as the main driver while they remain the legal owner of the car. This ensures that the children cannot sell the car without consulting the parent.

As far as you are concerned, if you're already insured as the main driver, then you are fine to drive the car. You can find out who the owner of a car is by looking at the registration certificate (V5) which will show both the legal owner and the registered keeper.
