What does the mechanic check for during an MOT test?

I have a 1972 Rover V8, given its age I know that there are a few MOT points that it does not have to comply with. Can I find a list of exactly what has to work properly? For example I know that it doesn't have to have fog lights or pass an emissions test (other than not producing excessive smoke visually).

Pete,

The mechanic will check the basics and make sure the most important bits work when you take your car for the test. Please check the article on MOT checklist to know exactly what will be tested.
