What is the cheapest insurance option for a new driver?

Hi, I am 18 years old and I have been looking for car insurance. The cheapest one I had quoted was £1,413.51. I was considering purchasing a new car (Ford Ka) for £4,800 on the Internet and was wondering what would the best thing to do. Either become a named driver on my parents car or purchase this car and insurance.

What would be cheaper in the long-term to either become a named driver and build up no claims or take my own policy out?

Also I have tried quotes from gocompare, moneysupermarket etc and they are all useless, I can always get a cheaper quote by going to their website.

Mark,

As you have noticed, is very high because of their lack of driving experience. If your parents will be driving the car more often, then you can become a named driver on their insurance policy and with some selected insurance companies, you will build your no claims bonus which will entitle you to a discount when you decide to take insurance in your own name with that same company afterwards. The benefits of this is that the insurance quote will be much cheaper.

If on the other hand, you decide to get insurance in your own name, the insurance premiums will be quite high to start off with. However, if you've been good and have not made any claims, you will get 1 year full no claims discount and this will bring your next quote down significantly. You will also be able to change companies and use that no claims discount elsewhere which you cannot do when you're a named driver.

I'd say take your own policy and drive carefully and in the long term you will enjoy great insurance discounts.

Check out Direct Line Car Insurance as well because you won't find them on car insurance comparison sites and you may get better deals with them.
